Josh Dacus, CPA*
I grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee (near Nashville) before moving to Bartlesville, OK, and then graduating from the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) in Edmond, OK with BS in accounting and an MBA.
After graduation, I started my career as an accountant Dobson Communications where I worked on the corporate/IT side of accounting and learned how to provide excellent customer service and what a great culture looked like. I moved into the oil and gas industry after Dobson sold to AT&T and worked for Simons Petroleum as a financial analyst for a few years. There I was able to gain additional reporting experience and helped implement a new reporting software called OutlookSoft.
The oil and gas industry instantly drew me in with its complex accounting structure and ever-changing landscape through transactions. I left Simons for Sandridge Energy to get into the E&P side of things for a public company. There I was an accounting manager and heavily involved in corporate accounting, G&A budgeting, and E&P special projects for five years. It is also where I fell in love with SQL and learned about its game changing ability to efficiently utilize massive oil and gas data.
My most recent role was Assistant Controller at Tapstone Energy where I was instrumental in facilitating the closing of numerous A&D transactions, clearing SEC hurdles in preparation for an IPO in early 2017, issuance of senior notes subject to 144a in mid-2017, accounting for a troubled debt restructuring process in 2020, accounting and reporting for a publicly traded royalty trust (Chesapeake Granite Wash Trust “CHKR”) in 2021 - 2022 and completion of eight years of successfully audited financial statements.
I started at Embark in August 2022 and am excited to use my industry experience and knowledge now to help make client's lives easier. Embark helps me fulfill my passion to solve problems, provide solutions, build relationships, and serve people. It's culture of excellence, having fun and caring for others is contagious and is why I joined the company.
I like to spend time with my wife and six kids when I am not working and they are what fuel and humble me each day. Here are a few additional fun facts about myself: 1) I have been known to make a mean cheesecake, 2) I recently got a pellet grill and am obsessed with it and 3) I played ping-pong every day at lunch for the last five years.
